The Swarthies are recurring antagonists in the animated series, making their debut in Missing Teddy.

Large Swarthie

The Large Swartie is an antagonist in Missing Teddy. With his partner, they stole all the teddy bears in London N10, sew socks on them as ears and sold them. After stealing Mr. Bean's Teddy, they were soon captured by Mr. Bean and arrested by the Sergeant officer.

He is the larger of the two Swarthies, and appears to be the mastermind. In Bean's Bounty, he got arrested alongside his partner for stealing the treasure and tying Mr. Bean to a chair. In In the Pink, he got arrested after stealing and dying wild badgers pink and in Valuable Lessons, he shared his evil plan to his partner so that they can steal Mrs. Wicket’s valuables.

Small Swarthie

The Small Swartie is an antagonist in Missing Teddy. With his partner, they stole teddy bears, stuffed the socks ears with stuffing and sold them. After stealing Mr. Bean's Teddy, they were soon captured by Mr. Bean and arrested by the Sergeant.

He is the smaller of the two Swarthies, and appears to be the one that does most of the work. In Bean's Bounty, he got arrested alongside his partner for stealing the treasure and tying Mr. Bean to a chair. In In the Pink, he got arrested after stealing and dying wild badgers pink and lastly, in Valuable Lessons, he disguised as an on-duty person and tried to take Mrs. Wicket’s heart and attempted to marry her for her valuables but failed with both being arrested.

  • Emails with a member of the original cartoon's production confirmed these two unnamed thieves were officially called the "Swarthies" and not the aforementioned "Burgulars, Thieves, ect."
    • The word "Swarthie" has several adjectives, but the adjective that applies to this case is "Evil, malicious."[1]
  • The two have appeared in videogames Mr. Bean and Mr. Bean's Adventure Around The World serving as antagonists much like in the cartoon.
    • Interestingly in Mr. Bean's Adventure Around The World, they have names, the small one being Guilid and the large one being Gratoni.
